Marsabit Water and Sewerage Company (MARWASCO) has taken a step further as per the number six of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) demand to purify water that residents draw from pans for direct consumption.
The managing director Hon. Stephen Sora Katelo has confirmed that with the help from Opblue, the company intends to install water tanks that would be fitted with sawyer filtration systems to enable communities that depend on rain harvested water through pans and rooftops to purify the commodity and make it fit for human consumption.
He said all effort is inline with 6th sustainable development goal to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for pro-poor residents of Marsabit County.
MARWASCO is aimed at achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water as well as adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations.
Assessment done at Marsabit Water and Sewerage Company Water Laboratory by the water quality Management confirmed that the systems used by Opblue to purify water is safe and quality for adoption.
There are No detergents or chemicals used in the process of purification which makes it safe for you human consumption.
An official with OpBlue, William Muchini said a sample test of water drawn from Haro Bota Earth Dam in Jirme location was highly contaminated with cholera and typhoid causing germs and that organization would support plans towards its purification.
He said that the organization will team up with Marsabit Water and Sewerage Company and the county department of water in availing sawyer filtration systems that would help in the provision of safe and clean drinking water to hundreds of residents in Jirme. And its environs.
He pointed out that climate change was impacting negatively into the local fragile environment adding that urgent measures were required in order to save water catchments and remaining tree cover.
In his remarks, the county secretary Hon. Hussein Tari said digitization of services was the way to go in order to serve members of the public with the expected efficiency.
Mr Tari hailed the leadership of the Marsabit Water and company for their accountability approach in their management and asked them to step up efforts to avail wholesome water available to Marsabit residents which he said remains the most elusive commodity in the region.
This he said would help in keeping water borne diseases at bay adding that a population battling with infections can never prosper as resources would always be diverted to fight diseases.
“MARWASCO has set an example of good management of public affairs and I will not expect anything different from the other government departments” he stated and asked residents to always take an active role in the implementation of development projects in their areas.
